WIP Wed 4/1/09

Kansas City area shops are gearing up for their shop hop this weekend. It starts tomorrow. I quilted the shop hop quilt for Quilters Quarters in Leavenworth. picture-5589 The blocks are set on point so I quilted feathers down the diagonal areas. I love doing feathers!

Here’s another quilt I did last week. It’s  covered in feathers too. Did I say, I love feathers?!!picture-5601picture-5604

picture-56021 I didn’t know what to put into this block, so guess what? Yep! I put a feather!

Well, I’m getting a little silly here. I am tired. I think I better go to bed.

WIP Wed 3/25

Here it is Wed. again. I’ve mostly quilted on customer quilts this last week. As far as my own stuff……..well, I did make my BOM block for this month. I finished it up last night.picture-5555

Here are the blocks so far.picture-5556

This year my guild’s opportunity quilt is going to be an embroidered redwork quilt. At the last meeting they had packets we could pick up to do some of the blocks. I have 1 block completed and I’m working on the 2nd block. I enjoy handwork, but I don’t do it very often. picture-5553 I’ve been taking the blocks on the bus with me, and I have about 20 minutes to sit between routes and work on them.

That’s it for my works in progress.

I have these little flowers that are blooming near my back door. I can hardly wait for more things to bloom. picture-5554

Here’s the Patchwork party quilt that I quilted a few weeks ago. I couldn’t post any pics of it until the party started. It’s hanging in the shop here.picture-5552

Ok, that’s is for now. Have a great day!!

First day of spring!

I’m glad that winter is officially over! I know here in Kansas we’ll still have cold weather, but it’s nice to know that soon the flowers will be in bloom and the grass will be green and the weather will be warm!! I’m not a cold weather person………..I hate being cold. I guess the only good thing about winter is that you can snuggle up under a quilt and get warm. I have plenty of those around. LOL!!

Anyway, on to other things. My computer is really running slow these days. I get mad at it because I don’t have time to waste being on here. I like to add pictures whenever I post a new blog, (I figure that you’d rather see pictures than just listen to me yack about stuff.) But no pictures again today.

I’ve been off work this week for spring break and I’ve finished 3 customer quilts so far. (custom quilted)  I have the next one loaded on the machine. Hopefully I can get it done today.  I haven’t had time to work on any of my stuff lately. My snails trail quilt is still hanging on the design wall. I really want to get it done, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

I’m having lunch with my freind Pam tomorrow. YEAH!!!! I’m looking forward to getting together with her. I don’t get to see her very often. We had such fun on our trip to Italy last fall. I wish we could go again this year to the festival……..whenever I start thinking about Italy, I think of the food and how nice all the people were that we met.  Ok, I have to stay focused here. Tomorrow, Pam and I can talk about Italy, and I’m sure we will! We are going to go to the grand reopening of my LQS in the morning, then do some shopping around town before we have lunch at our favorite Mexican restaraunt.

Speaking of my LQS, my sister went to work there a couple weeks ago. I’ve seen her more in the last 2 weeks than I have the last 2 months! HAHA!! I went in there last week to help her choose fabric for the mystery lock in.  She chose a batik fabric with cats on it that are outlined in purples, turqoise, hot pink and lime green. She picked these colors to also go into the quilt. I think it’s going to be awsome!! She wasn’t sure about the green, but I convinced her it will work, I showed a picture of the quilt to one of the girls that works there, and she agreed with the choice of green.

Speaking of the mystery lock in……my freind Doris is working on getting my quilt top made.  I dyed the fabrics for it and got pretty close to the same shades.    I can hardly wait to see it!!! I’ve seen several peoples choices for fabrics, and they all look great. That’s the fun thing about doing the mystery, all the quilts come out looking so different. When the days starts, we walk around and check out everyones fabrics, sometimes, our first thought  is………oh….. I don’t know about those fabrics…….then later when the quilt top has came alive, it’s like WOW! I never would have chosen those fabrics, but they look GREAT!!!! I’m looking forward to seeing all the ladies again and their fabric choices!

Well, I guess that’s about it for what’s been going on around here. I need to get back to the machine and get the next quilt quilted.

Have a great day.

WIP Wednesday 3-4-09

Here it is Wed again. I really don’t have anything to post today. Most of what I’ve worked on this last week can’t be shown. I finished quilting the Patchwork Party quilt for my LQS. I think the Patchwork Party starts on the 15th but I’m not sure. Anyway, no pictures till then. I really like the quilt my LQS made.
Speaking of my LQS, they moved last week. I went into the new shop location on Monday. It really looks nice. The old shop was featured in a couple of magazines so you might have seen it. It’s Quilters Quarters in Leavenworth, KS. The new shop has a totally different look to it. It sits on a corner so it has lots of window space on 2 sides. It looks great!

I dyed the fabric yesterday that I need for my lock in quilt. Now I need to get it to my friend Doris, so she can make the quilt top and test the pattern out to make sure we have it all written correctly.

We went down to Texas earlier this month. The Rio Grande Valley quilt show was held in Pharr, TX. They had some really beautiful quilts in the show.

I celebrated my 30th wedding anniversary on Monday. Wow…….that’s a lot of years! Hopefully, we’ll have many more!!!

I guess that’s it for now.
Have a great day!

Staying busy quilting

Where has the first half of Feb. gone??????? I can’t believe it’s half over already. This month I quilted a quilt for a lady from Norway. She was here in the area last summer and saw a quilt that I had quilted at my LQS, so she bought the kit and contacted me to quilt it. I have it quilted and attached the binding for her, now I need to get it shipped off.  I have another one of the same quilt coming soon from another lady. I quilted peacock feathers on the original one in the shop and that’s what everybody likes about the quilt. When I originally did the quilt, I wasn’t sure if the shop owner would like it, but she did and it’s gotten me more business, so that’s a good thing. picture-5053

I received the next Patchwork Party quilt from my LQS yesterday. I love this one!!! ( Sorry I can’t show it to you.) Now I have to decide how to quilt it.

I quilted a BOM for the shop last week, I think it’s called Queen and her Court. picture-5033

My friend Sharon and I are getting ready for our annual mystery Lock in. We’re having it later than usual this year, but that’s a good thing for me. Sharon and I both make the quilts to ensure that we have all the directions written correctly.  My friend Doris has agreed to piece my quilt top for me this year.  YEAH Doris!!! She’s going to piece the queen size top. I finally decided what colors I’m going to use in it, but I need to dye 2 of the fabrics. The blue and purple, I have enough of the pink. Hopefully I can match the colors to what I dyed before. I really like these colors.picture-5032

I’m also going to teach a class on borders and bindings next month, so I’m trying to get things ready for that. I’m hoping that by offering this class, it will help people learn the steps to attaching the border so that their quilt top lays nice and flat and also keeps it square.

Well, I guess that’s it for now, I better get back to the quilt on the machine. Hopefully tonight I’ll get started on sewing the rows together on the snail t’s quilt.  I haven’t had time to work on it lately.

Have a great day!

WIP Wednesday 2-11-09

Last week was a tough week to get through. I’m getting back into the groove but it’s been hard. I finished piecing the remaining snails trail blocks. I’ve decided to name the quilt “Jared’s Rainbow” because Jared aka Floyd brought so much color into my world. His bright smile, his laughter, he was so happy all the time. The bright colors in this quilt make me happy and that’s what Jared always did. I’m determined now to get it finished. Here it is on the design wall.picture-5007

I guess I better get back to the quilt on the machine.  Have a great day.

Floyd

How do you deal with the loss of a child? Not my child, but one of my bus riders. Floyd (nickname I gave him in the first grade) was a fun loving, laughing, always doing something silly, nice, sweet, innocent,  3rd grade boy that I loved taking to school everyday. He knew he was my favorite on the bus, yes, I know I’m not supposed to have favorites, but he was. He asked me one day as we’re going down the road, in the middle of the conversation, he says “Theresa, am I your favorite on the bus?” Without thinking, I said “Yes” followed by “OOPS, I’m not supposed to have favorites!”  Oh well, I’m glad now that I slipped and confirmed what he already knew. Yes Floyd was my favorite! We had a friendship that I will cherish forever! He would make signs and hang them up on the bus, last week was Kansas day and the kids made Jayhawks, so he gave me his and  hung the Jayhawk up in the window of the bus.  I’m going to have to take it down eventually, but not yet.  I don’t want to accept the fact that Floyd will no longer be out waiting for the bus or come out of school and tell me what happened at school that day or what silly thing he did while playing at home.  As I sit here writing, the tears are streaming down my face.  I’m not looking forward to driving this afternoon. I didn’t learn of the tradgedy until I had finished my morning route.  This is going to be a long week.  I wish I had one more time to tell him, how special he was to me, how he brightened up my days with his silly questions and stories. I will never forget my special Floyd!

Here’s the Jayhawk he made. He laughed about putting the wings upside down, but he didn’t care! picture-4997

Give your loved ones an extra hug and kiss today and be sure to tell them that you love them, because you never know what tomorrow will bring.

Theresa aka Bacon (Floyds nickname for me)

WIP Wednesday 1-28-09

Well, this last week I quilted 4 customer quilts. One was an all over feather design and the other 3 were custom quilted.  I need to get one boxed up and sent off to Italy, but it’s just too cold to think about getting out and going to the Post Office. I think it was around zero degrees this morning. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! That’s cold!

Anyway, here’s more blocks from the Snails trail that I’m working on. I peiced 24 more blocks and I have 24 more to go.  I’m putting them on the design wall as they will go into the quilt, so some places are still empty. Maybe by having the empty spots, it will keep me on track to continue working on these. (I really don’t like to piece, so I’m reaching the point of saying “ok…… that’s enough for now”  then it will go into a box, and years from now, I’ll find it and  wonder why I didn’t finish that?)  Oh well…..picture-4996

That’s it for now. Have a great day!

quilting and the economy

I can’t help but wonder with the economy heading the way it is, just what can us machine quilters should  look forward to? How is it going to effect our business? I know that some quilt full time and  depend upon their quilting to pay bills, whereas others have a full time job and quilt on the side.

They were talking on the news this morning about all the jobs that are being lost today. I think they said like 57,000 more people were being laid off today from some of the large companies.  If people don’t have jobs are they still going to be having quilts machine quilted?

I beleive people will still continue to make quilts, but will they quilt them? How many old unquilted tops are there in this world? I know I have about 40 unquilted tops.  I keep making more tops, but when will they get quilted? When I need one?

I would love to hear comments  on how you feel about the economy and the quilting world.

Thanks!

Theresa

WIP Wednesday 1/21/09

Here’s  what I’ve got going on this week.

I finished sewing the scrappy bargello quilt top. I still need to put some borders on it, I just can’t quite decide what I’m going to use yet.  The top went together fast using Bonnie Hunters directions from quiltville.compicture-4993

I’ve been working on the snails trail blocks a little too, over this last week. I have this much done so far.picture-49941

I’m making 8 blocks of each of the colors, so I’ll need 64 blocks total and I have 16 blocks completed. Only 48 more to go!

I played around with the blocks on the design wall and look at this, doesn’t that pattern look neat? I think it does. Hmmmmm, do I see another quilt made from snails trail blocks????????????picture-4995

I guess I better get back to work. There’s never enough hours in the day, to accomplish everything I want and need to get done. I’m sure you know how that is. Oh well, enjoy your day!
