Is it still August?

Here in Kansas, this time of year, the grass should be brown from the hot summer time temperatures. This year, the grass is still green, I guess because we’ve had cool weather all summer, with lots of rainfall. We’ve had over 5″ of rain just this week. I don’t think we’ve even hit 100 degrees this summer. We only had 4 days in the 90’s for the entire month of July. That’s not right!! I love hot summer days! I’m getting ripped off this year.

To make things even worse. Look at what I’m seeing out my kitchen window.

Picture 002

There is a tree that’s already turning red! It’s too early for that!! I hope that doesn’t mean we’re going to have an early winter! That’s a depressing thought. Can you tell I don’t like winter? LOL!!

Oh well, on to quilting. My sister made this little wall hanging from some strips that she received at our guilds poker night a while back.  I finally got it quilted for her.

Picture 001

I put the chubby leaves in the border and I thought I’d see how it looks with 2 vein lines instead of just one like I always put in there. I like the double vein look. I’ll have to do that more often.

Picture 003

I loaded a Laurel Birch panel quilt earlier today, so I guess I better get back to work on it. Have a nice day!

Sewing 10 minutes a day

I’ve decided that in order for me to finish the quilt top that has been on my design wall since February, I’m going to have to make myself work on it for 10 minutes a day.  I have found that this usually works for me. Just 10 minutes. That’s it! I think I can find 10 minutes in my day to quickly sit down at my DSM and sew.  I sat down last night and sewed 4 sets of blocks into pairs.

Picture 008

I’ll then sew the pairs into squares. I have 8 out of 16 large squares sewn together.

Picture 010

I really need to finish this. I’m ready to look at something new on my design wall. LOL!!

I did the sewing on the blocks while taking a break from quilting.  You know sometimes, it feels good to sit down for a minute. LOL!! Anyway, this is a block from the quilt I was working on. I put  loops with flowers and leaves in the background behind the baskets.

Picture 004

My customer picked it up this morning. Now I need to get the next one loaded on.

Well, that’s it! Have a great day!

guild meeting and Lakeside Speedway

I so enjoyed getting to meet Judy Laquidara at my guild meeting last Thursady. I went by the class on Friday and saw all the blocks that the ladies were sewing together. I love seeing all the different fabrics that everyone chooses! I’m looking forward to seeing the blocks in finished quilts! I sure wish I could have taken the class!!!!!!!! I did get  to talk to Judy a little more on Friday.  She is so nice!! I love her quilts too. This was one of my favorites.Picture 035 Look at that border!! COOL!!

Ok, now on to Lakeside stuff. I wrote last week that the Discovery channel has been there, so last night I took my camera with me and took a few pics of the cameras. Here they are located on top of the building.Picture 009

Here the guys are in the stands talking with the families.

Picture 015

Here they were down in front filming  up into the stands. You can see the big microphone thing above the people they were filming.

Picture 010

This is my brother  Tom, coming out to start his heat race. Yellow car #81.

Picture 012

And here is my nephew Dan in the black #81J. They were both in the same heat race.

Picture 013

Tom came up and watched some of the races in the stands. Here he is with our cousin Mike. (Mike on left and Tom on right)

Picture 016

Danny started the night in second place, in the point standings. He came in 2 points behind Kerry #68. Here is how Kerry’s night ended………….

Picture 019

I was watching Tom come down the back straightaway and somehow, Bubba (the car on the bottom) and Kerry got tangled up. I looked just in time to see Kerry’s car land on top of Bubba. There was a third car involved somehow, but he wasn’t in with these 2. Both drivers were ok, but I’m sure Kerry was ONE MAD DUDE!! Taking a championship is serious stuff for these guys. Kerry ended up finishing 23 out of 24 and Dan finished 10th (which wasn’t great but it was enough to put him solely in first place). He’s ahead now by 10 points with about 4 more weeks to go.

Well, that’s it for now. Have a great day!

I’ve been busy…..

This last week has been a busy one. I quilted the next Patchwork Party quilt for my LQS and took it in to the shop on Monday. I think the fall party starts on Sept 1st.  Anyway, my part is done. Yeah!!

I also quilted a baby quilt this week. It’s made using the leftover blocks from another quilt. She just wanted a simple meander on it, with a few flowers  here and there.Picture 026 Picture 027

I quilted this one by doing a continuous curve in the 9 patch blocks and putting a flower in the printed squares. I then put leaves in the sashings and borders.Picture 028

Now for the fun part of my day. Tonight was my guild meeting and we had a speaker,  Judy Laquidara!  I read her blog all the time http://www.patchworktimes.com she showed us lots of beautiful quilts and how easy her patterns are.   Some of them look complicated, but once she shows what is the block and what is the sashing,  it’s easy!  I heard a lot of positive remarks after the meeting!!  I think everyone really enjoyed having her come to our quild meeting. Of course I was thrilled getting to meet her!! She’s doing a workshop tomorrow, but I have to work, I don’t think my boss would appreciate me taking off work the second day of school!! I do hope to stop in and check things out between routes though!

That’s it for now…….

Discovery channel comes to Kansas

Last night was the second week that the Discovery channel has been at Lakeside Speedway (local dirt track in Kansas City)  taping for a reality show. It’s following 4 of the local drivers. My brother Tom and nephew Danny are 2 of the drivers. It’s really different having all these cameras around the track and guys running around following my SIL everywhere she goes at the track. I forget that she’s wired and that they can hear everything we say. It’s also interesting to watch how they do the filming.  The show is supposed to air sometime this fall and they’re calling it Friday Night Fued.  Tom blew his engine last night in the heat race, so he got out his backup car and had to run the B feature, unfortunately, something came loose and he had to pull off, so he didn’t qualify for the A feature.  So he came up and sat with us to watch the race instead of  being in the race.  Dan had totaled his car the week before so they spent the week building him another car. His rearend was too light so he was having to stay on the bottom of the track and it kept him from passing anyone. He finished 9th, so he still made the top 10. He’s running neck and neck with another driver for the point lead.  It looks like he’s 2 points behind Kerry now. Hopefully he’ll have better luck next week. Tom too!! Last week Tom  (after blowing an engine last week) he was able to come up through the B and finish 5th in the A feature. I was hoping for another good run last night, but no such luck.

I know this isn’t quilt related stuff, but I hope you enjoyed reading it.  If you are a Nascar fan, Lakeside is where Clint Bowyer ran before he signed on with Nascar. We never cheered for him when he was racing against Tom, but now we get excited when our Kansas boy wins!!

Ok………. I’ll go back to quilting………………

Attaching binding with the longarm

Have you ever wondered how to do this?  Well, here is the way that I sew mine on.  I cut my binding strips @ 2 1/2″ then fold in half and press.

First, make your binding and press the beginning of it diagonally. Then trim the excess away.

Picture 001

Working from the front of the machine. (I like to start down anywhere from 6 to 10″  inches from the upper right hand corner of the quilt.)  Lay the binding on the quilt, backstitch to secure the thread then take a few stitches, stop and open the beginning of the binding. Sew down a few inches, then stop and close the binding strip. I use the foot as a guide. When I start off, I sew a little closer to the edge, so that when I come back, those stitches will be covered and I don’t have to worry about not hitting the exact sewing line. (since I can’t see it when I come back. LOL!)

Picture 003

Picture 004

Make sure that as you sew, you are keeping the binding even with the edge of the quilt.  Stop with the needle down, and advance the quilt as needed.

Picture 005

Picture 006

When you get to the corner, stop the distance of the hopping foot (if that’s what you’re using as your guide) away from the bottom edge of the quilt. Sew off the quilt to your right.

Picture 007

Fold the binding as you would on your DSM.

Picture 008

Then start sewing across the bottom of the quilt.  Making sure that you keep the binding and the edge of the quilt even.

Picture 009

Repeat this process for each corner. The lower left corner and up the left side of the quilt is the trickiest. You are actually going to be going backwards, and sewing away from you.

Picture 010

Picture 011

I lay the binding on the edge of the quilt and hold it down with my fingers to keep it from moving. Stop with needle down and roll the quilt as needed.

Picture 012

Picture 015

Continue to the upper left corner, across the top to the upper right hand corner and you’re almost finished.

Picture 016

Take the binding strip, lay it down on the already sewn binding to see where you need to cut it, so that it will fit up into the already sewn down part of the binding.  I like to make it a pointy diagonal, it seems to fit up into the binding better.

Picture 017

Lift up the beginning of the binding. Remember the part that you didn’t sew down in the beginning? That’s where you stick the end of the binding strip. Then lay it back down. Make sure that both the beginning and end of the binding strips are nice and even, then sew down the remaining binding.

Picture 018

Here it is finished.

Picture 022

Now I take it off the machine, trim the edges and hand sew it down.  At that point I also use  a matching thread and  small stitches to  close the diagonal area where  the ends meet.

Picture 021

Ok, that’s it. Did it make sense? I hope I explained everything alright, if not, let me know and I’ll try to explain it better.  If you have any questions please ask!

Also, please tell me if you try this and how you liked it.  It does save time and no wrestling with the quilt at the DSM. LOL!!

Have a great day!

My new project

Well, I wrote a while back about wanting to start on a new project and it finally got the better of me! I started working on it! I ordered a  bolt of this beautiful hand dyed 108″ wide backing fabric and when it came I just thought it was so pretty!  Anyway, I had ordered a set of patterns of state birds and flowers back in 2003 (I looked at the post mark) and I thought hmmmmmmmmm, I wonder what that would look like if I embroidered it in white? hmmmmmmmmm So anyway, I couldn’t wait any longer and I marked one block and started work on it. Here it is. What do you think?

Picture 002

So far I’m lovin it! I started it Thursday night and Friday I decided that I needed to make a bag to carry it in. That way, I’ll have everything together and if I need to grab it and head out the door, all I have to do is grab the bag and go. So………today, I made a bag for it.

Picture 001

I combined 2 different pattern ideas and made it the size I wanted. It folds open so that I can get to what I want.  I put pockets on the inside to hold certain things.

Picture 006

I’m going to add velcro to the upper corners to help hold it closed. I will also put a small piece of velcro behind the yellow pocket and the turquoise pocket to hold them closed.

The turquoise pocket will hold the patterns and blocks when I get them cut.

The orange pocket is divided into 3 sections and will hold the embroidery floss,  scissors and the pens I use to mark the patterns. The green strip is the bottom of the bag.

Picture 007

The yellow pocket will hold the finished blocks and the pink pocket will hold the block that I’m working on.

Picture 008

Well, that’s what I’ve accomplished over the weekend.  As soon as I get the velcro pieces sewn on, I’ll be all done with it! Yeah!! The bag anyway!!! LOL!!!  It will take years to make 50 blocks. That’s one reason why I chose to make the bag using a black fabric! LOL!!  Who knows what the bag will look like after I tote it around for ?????years.

That’s it for now……………….

A little tip that saves time

I didn’t get a whole lot of quilting done today, but I did get some of the blocks quilted. I thought I’d share a tip that I used today for marking. I made radiating lines coming out from the design in the center, so instead of using a ruler and marking off every so many inches on each side and having to find the center of each block,  I cut a square of paper the size of the block and then folded in half, folded again in half, then again so that I had even folds along the edges. I then clipped the edge of the folds, so that I could use that as a guide. I then opened the paper and folded the opposite way, to get the other side marked so that it has little notches all the way around. I then laid it on the block and made little marks in each notched area.Picture 009

Then I took a long ruler and connected the marks, so that I could see where to quilt when I was against the design. (I used a disappearing pen and it didn’t stay on there very long.) Once I started I had to work fast!

Picture 010

If you haven’t used folded paper for marking distances on sections, it is quick and easy. It can also be used in sashings.

Picture 013

Ok that’s if for now. I’ll get back to canning tomatoes. They are finally coming on strong, so the next few weeks I’ll be canning lots of tomatoes and making salsa. Yum! Yum!

Have a great one!

Getting back to work

I had a busy weekend so I didn’t get hardly any quilting done.  I had one on the machine last Thursday that I knew I would finish on Friday. Well, it didn’t happen……….DH was home Friday & for some reason, when he’s around, I just don’t get as much done as I hope to. Oh well…….. he did go over to his Dad’s that night, and I thought I could finish the quilt before I headed out to the races. Didn’t happen…………….thread kept breaking. Oh well……………..I thought I could get it done on Saturday. Think again! We had a picnic over at the ball fields for the team that my DH coached this summer. I ended up spending Saturday getting everything ready for that. Running to town to make sure we had everything and then cooking that afternoon. I kept thinking about the quilt that was almost done.  Sunday came, went to church and finally late in the afternoon, I finished the quilting. Yeah!!!  I always do the borders last and it had a solid black border and I was using King Tut variegated thread so I was anxious to see how it was going to look on the border. I put  chubby little leaves in the border.

Picture 004

The quilt was made up of nothing but triangles, so I just put a flower in each triangle.

Picture 003

I was glad when I finally  finished  it.

My brother and I went to a funeral yesterday, it’s almost a 2 hour drive to get there. He made the comment when we pulled up that “we probably look like the Redneck cousins” since we had a motor in the back of the truck. I had to laugh!! He figured that since we were only going to be 20 miles from the place that he needed to take the motor, he might as well drop it off.  So we did!

So anyway, today I got back to quilting. I actually got 2 quilts quilted today. I only meandered them, so they went fairly quick. But they are done!!! I just finished loading the next one on, so hopefully I can get started on it in the morning.  I guess I better get to bed now, it’s getting late.

Have a great day!

Theresa

Oh….I was thinking today while I was quilting, the next quilt is one where I’m going to put the binding on while it’s still on the machine. Anyone interested in seeing pictures of how that’s done?  I thought if I remembered, that I could take a few pictures if anyone is interested. Let me know.

A day out with Family

I didn’t get any quilting done yesterday. I went to lunch with my sister, Mom, 2 Aunts, 2 cousins and my Aunts Great granddaughter. One of my cousins lives in Oklahoma and she came up for a couple days, so we decided to have a get together.

Aunt Donna, Mom and Aunt Kathy.

Picture 001

Picture 003

Cousin Diane, sister Jo Ellen and cousin Jean.

Picture 004

Aunt Kathy sent me this picture last night. I NEVER look good in pictures, so I avoid having my picture taken. We were kidding around yesterday and I posed for this shot.  I was trying to look glamorous but instead I look like a dork!!LOL!!! As usual!!

Legends Luncheon July 2009 009

We had a really nice day. After spending 2 hours at the restaurant, we went over to the Russell Stover store and they all had ice cream and we visited another hour or so.

Picture 008

Now I need to go finish the quilt I’m working on. I only have a couple more rows and the border to quilt, then it came come off the machine. Yeah! Then I can load the next one.

Have a great day!
