Design wall Monday 12/31

Well, today is the last day of 2012. I didn’t finish as many of my projects this year as I had hoped to, but, I guess that leaves me plenty of things to work towards finishing next year! LOL!!

Yesterday I decided to start a new project. My friend Barb made a quilt from blue jeans and I’m getting ready to quilt it for her, so I decided to make one while I have hers to look at. She told me how to make it, but I like having something to look at.
I’m still cutting up blue jeans but I had to sew a few blocks…..

It might not look like much now, but there’s more to it. 😉 Barb plans to offer the pattern on her blog as soon as she gets it up and running. I might show you Barbs after I get it quilted. 🙂

Well, that’s it for my design wall this week. To see more design walls, check out http://www.patchworktimes.com

Adding borders

As a long arm quilter, I see this all the time. That is borders that are wider than the center of the quilt. Do you really want an hour glass shaped quilt? If you have a good quilter, she’ll work them in. But really now, wouldn’t it be better to do it right from the start????

I always lay the quilt top out and bring the bottom and top to the center of the quilt. The left sides are even.

But look what happens on the right side.

With accurate measuring, this could have been avoided. This quilt will go bak to its owner nice and square, but I will have to work that excess into the quit, whereas proper measuring would have avoided the excess. So the lesson here is always measure the center of the quilt and cut the borders that size. Both vertically and horizontally. Your quilter will appreciate it! 🙂

Have a good one!

Design wall Monday 11/19

Here it is Monday again. I didn’t get anything done on my row by row that’s on the wall, but I did get some more sewing done on my storm at sea. After sewing the first 2 rows together, I remembered why I don’t like miniatures! LOL!! Those little pieces are so hard to work with! Anyway, here’s what I have done so far on it.

Well, that’s what I have going on. To see more design walls, check out http://www.patchworktimes.com

What’s on the machines 11/14

Wow, I can’t believe that next week is Thanksgiving! That means Christmas is right around the corner! Ugh!!!

Anyway, I worked on piecing some of the miniature storm at sea yesterday, but today I need to get back to quilting. I’m putting a cute pumpkin panto on this quilt.

The quilt on Millie isn’t one that I can show, but I’ll let you have a peek at what I’m doing on the borders. 🙂

That’s it for now.

Have a good day!

My first Bernina

I’m so excited! I just picked up my very first Bernina! I ordered it while at Houston earlier this month. They shipped it to my local Bernina dealer and I picked it up today. I can hardly wait to start sewing!!!

I bought one of John Flynn’s precut miniature quilt packets while in Houston too. I figured I’d test out the machine by making it first. Let the sewing begin!!! 🙂

Design wall Monday 11/12

I know it takes me forever to get my own tops sewn together. The one on my design wall is slowly taking shape. I worked on sewing the scrappy squares a little bit this last week and yesterday I sewed the first 3 rows together. I enjoyed working on my patriotic quilt yesterday as it was Veterans day, here’s what I have so far.

Design wall Monday 10/29

A while back I had some blocks that I needed to put together into a quilt top. I decided to use scraps for the sashings and borders. I like the way it came out.

20121029-211525.jpg

I’ve had these rows on the design wall now for several weeks. (I don’t spend much time piecing) anyway, now I’ve decided that I’m going to use scraps to make the quilt bigger. The rows were exchanged at my guild and each one is about 42 inches wide.
I am going to make a frame around each row so that all the rows are the same exact length. Then I will use 4 patches to make a row between each row. Here’s the idea.

I got in my scraps and cut lots of 1 1/2″ strips. I use whatever size strips I have.
I then sewed them into sets.

Then I cut them into 11/2′ pieces and make into 4 patches.

I still have a lot more 4 patches to make, but that’s a start……

That’s it for now.
