Scraps and treadle

Have you ever made a scrap quilt and not been happy with the finished look of it? I have! I never seem to have the right balance or something…..
Anyway, I’m going to make a scrap quilt, but I’m going to go about it differently than I have I the past. I never thought about the prints or colors or whether the fabric had a big print or was a tone or tone. I just used scraps and made it. Well……that might have been my problem….as my friend Vicky makes lots of scrap quilts and hers always look great!!!! Hmmm…..I think her secret is that she controls which scraps go into her quilts. Maybe that’s my problem!! I throw everything in there!!
Not this time though. I gathered up some scraps that have smaller prints and seem to look good together. So this is my starting point.

I’m going to make flying geese blocks with them. I hope! LOL!

The other thing is that at guild there’s a challenge to make a quilt using your treadle machine. Yep, I’m going to get the old treadle up and running. It worked great back in 2002, but I haven’t touched it since! I think I have a job ahead of me! LOL!
It’s an old 1800’s Wheeler and Wilson.

If someone finds a mind, please return it, I think I lost Mine!!! LOL!!

Design wall Monday 9-16

After exchanging the summer rows last week, I arranged them a few different ways and I think this is how they look the best. The top row has a large open white space so I have something in mind to put there. I’ll have to play around a bit to see if it will work. I’ll also have to decide whether to put a sashing between the rows or just sew the rows together as is. Decisions, decisions……….
Oh we’ll, here’s my wall……

Summer row exchange

Thursday night was our Summer row by row exchange at guild. Everyone had their rows there to exchange. We had four groups with 6 in each one. There were sailboats, ice cream comes, pineapples, beach scenes, watermelons and flip flops just to name a few.

Group 1. This is my group. I sure am glad I got mine done! 🙂

Everybody did a great job of making rows. Some of them were so creative and cute! Now I need to come up with another fun idea for an exchange……

That’s it for now.

Flip flops finished…..

They are done! Yea! Good thing too, as they are due tonight! I sewed the last blocks together last night before going to bed. What a relief…….
My original plan was to make yo yo’s to go on each flip flop like I did on this little wall hanging that I made years ago.

20130912-093301.jpg

Ok, let’s see, I have 6 rows of flip flops…..5 pairs in each row…….5 x 6=30…….30 pairs x 2 flip flops=60 yo yo’s…….I wanted 2 yo yo’s per flip flop….holy smokes! I needed 120 yo yo’s!!! With 4 days left until the exchange. I made 3 yo yo’s………

20130912-093935.jpg
Ok, after 3 yo yo’s I decided, that’s not going to work…..no way can I make 120 of them in 4 days………so I came up with the idea that I could cut out little flower shapes from felt and sew them down on each flip flop. 60 flower shapes with 60 little round centers……that became the plan……..but I thought if I had some Steam a seam…..maybe I could just iron them on and forget the sewing part. 🙂 that would save me some time. Of course I couldn’t find my Steam a seam……. I just happened to be in Walmart on Monday and thought that maybe by some huge miracle, they might have some……….but NO they didn’t………but ……..I saw some cute buttons……..just the right size!!! I had thought of buttons earlier but didn’t want to spend $40 getting enough buttons. But these packages were only 88 cents each and I needed 2 packs of 6 different colors. There were 2 sizes in each package. Woohoo!! That’s less than $12…..Miracles do happen!! I came home Monday and started sewing all the buttons on. Then Tuesday and Wednesday I sewed the blocks together. Now it’s Thursday, the day of the exchange and I’m all set and ready!! Hope the ladies like the rows I made. I can hardly wait to see what they made!

Design wall Monday 8/19

Here it is Monday again! I have 2 projects going on, on my wall right now. I got a few more flip flops made. I now have 18 pairs. I decided that if I use 5 pairs in each row instead of 6, I will only need to make 30 pairs instead of 36, so that’s what I’m going to do. That means 12 more sets to make before they get appliquéd down. Hope I make the deadline!! LOL!!

I worked on the pieced sashings that will go on the English Paper Piecing project that I’m working on. I have all the components made just need to appliqué them into the background squares.

“Go challenge” quilt

My friend Joelyn  Feverly decided to enter the AQS “GO challenge” contest. Here’s her quilt.

She brought the top to me to quilt and I was like “oh wow…….what am I going to do with it?

As time went on and the deadline for entry drew near……… I finally came up with an idea. I tried several different things but with the hearts set as they were and not much space between them, I was very limited on putting designs around the hearts. I ended up going with feathers here and there.  Some hang down, some don’t………….

With the heavy quilting in the center, I had to have something for the border, so I quilting lines, and lines and lines………

After giving it back to Joelyn, she scalloped the borders and put a piping on it. Here’s the pic she sent me.

I am proud to say that it WON the “Out of the box quilting” award in the contest!!!!!  I really did go out of the box trying to come up with the quilting designs for it!! I was afraid it would look like %$#%$^$ but it didn’t. It’s making it’s debut at the AQS Grand Rapids quilt show this weekend. It will then travel for the next year or so to several other AQS shows. So if you go to an AQS show where they have the “GO have fun challenge quilts”  check it out!

Ok that’s it for now……..

Storm at sea quilts

I finished the 2nd Storm at sea quilt that I needed to quilt. We were all together at Houston when we bought the kits for these quilts. Pam and Doris bought the same size kit so I have them hanging side by side over the machine to show how each one was quilted. Doris told me how she wanted hers done but Pam said do whatever on hers. She got circles with seahorses in the center. Hope she likes it!

20130810-213529.jpg

Maybe if I had bought the bigger size kit, mine would be done too! But oh-NO, I bought the miniature. It’s been rolled up for months. I do at least have part of it sewn……

20130810-214048.jpg
I didn’t realize just how small it is until I laid it beside Pam’s!! Wow.

Speaking of Pam, I have another of her quilts done for her. It has lots of feathers.
