Borders are on

I’ve had a busy week, but managed to find time to get the borders added on to my latest string quilt.

After posting pictures of my pieced borders, I got some positive remarks about them, so I designed another quilt using the diamond shapes. There seems to be no end to the use of strings!!

Design wall 6/20/17 string star quilts

My design wall is bare today, I hope to fix that soon, as I am working on my next string quilt.

Last time I posted, my design wall had the beginning of the string stars quilt on it. It is now finished.

After finding an old string quilt top in an antique store I decided that it would be fun to make the same pattern with today’s fabrics. The old top (right) is dated back to around the late 1800’s judging by the fabrics used in it. (I’ve been told)  Mine (left) was made from scraps from my stash over 100 years later.  Anyway,  here they are side by side.

This quilt was a challenge to get made, but it’s done and now I’m going back to making squares for my string blocks! LOL!!

That’s for now. Have a good week!

Design wall 2/27/17 bindings

Actually my design wall is bare at the moment………I made a quilt last week using our Triple Play pattern. Here it is without the borders added on.

I used two different marbled fabrics from The Quilted Treasures line.  It’s now finished, quilted and in the stack of bindings that I need to finish. I usually try to finish the bindings before the stack gets out of hand but this time they got away from me! I have 8 that are ready to sew the bindings down.

So nothing is on my design wall this week. But there’s plenty on my plate. Bindings…….

Design wall 9/19/16 Crown Royal block

Another Monday is here, so I’ll just check in quickly with an update on the Crown Royal blocks. I got everything cut (thanks to my Accuguilt cutter!) I decided to go with a simple block that can be sewn together pretty quick. I need to make 36 blocks for the quilt. I started sewing a few of the 4 patch units together last night so I could lay out a block to see how it will look.

Pretty simple block to make. I think it’s going to look great once I add the sashings and cornerstones.

That’s it for today. Need to get the long arms fired up. To see more walls check out www.patchworktimes.com

Design wall 9/13/16 Crown royal squares….the beginning…..

I planned on getting some machine quilting done today between bus routes, but when thunderstorms move in plans get changed.😩 I keep both LongArm machines unplugged when there’s lightning going on.  Anyway, since I couldn’t get any quilting done, I decided to start ironing the Crown royal bags that I’ve cut apart. I ironed 49 bags, but decided to only use 36.

After I finished  ironing all the pieces, it was still storming, so I started cutting them into squares and strips to make 4patch blocks.

Next step will be to cut the other fabric I’m using but that will have to wait for another time. The storms have finally left and now it’s time for me to leave on the school bus.

Anyway, that’s it for my design wall this week. Joining in with http://www.patchworktimes.com

Hope the storms are gone for today.

Design wall 8/29/16 Uneven bars, Kaffe HST’s & apple pies

I got the borders added onto the Uneven bars quilt top. Since I pulled the solid fabric strips for the quilt from a couple packages of precuts, I didn’t have yardage of any one solid color. I debated over what to do and then decided to pull more precut strips of the pinks and use them for the inside border. You’ll notice they are light on the top and then get darker towards the bottom.

It’s now ready to be quilted. It will have to wait for now as I have several customer quilts that need edge to edge designs on them. I did get these all quilted last week.  One small custom and the others edge to edge.

My design wall has these blocks on it today. I’m working on a new string quilt design using Kaffe fabrics. These are leftover blocks that I’ll make into a second quilt.
We’ve been enjoying apple pies this last week too! I’ve made 9 so far. We’re enjoying our 2nd pie, I took one over to my sons house & I put 6 in the freezer.

I was playing around with an app on my phone and put the 2 Uneven bars quilts that I’ve made, side by side in the picture.

They look so different! Hard to believe it’s the same pattern! If you use one of the patterns from my book #Sew,Slice,SpinandSash, I’d love to see it! 😀

Guess that’s it for me today. Hoping for another productive week! To see what others are working on, visit http://www.patchworktimes.com

Design wall 8/22/16 apples & progress on Uneven bars quilt top

With school starting back up last week, I didn’t have as much time to sew as I would’ve liked. Between the Olympics, the school bus and canning tomatoes, I had a pretty full week. I was hoping to get a break from the kitchen but my husband came home from his dad’s with a basket of apples yesterday.😳 now it’s apple pie time…….

I make the pies up and freeze them, then over the winter when I need a pie I just take it from the freezer and bake it. That part is nice! But it means spending more time in the kitchen this week. Ugh!

I did get most of the Uneven bars quilt top made. All I have left is to add the borders. It looks so different from the one made with black sashings. Looking forward to seeing it with the borders.

That’s it for now. Check out more walls at http://www.patchworktimes.com

Design wall 8/15/16 Kaffe strings & new project

Today is the last Monday of my summer vacation.😟 School starts back up on Wednesday, so it’s back to driving the big yellow fellow. He’s back in the driveway and ready to go.

I’ve been wanting to make another quilt from my book and decided that this chevron print will work. I have a couple of snack packs that I can pull the strips from.

I decided to make this pattern.

Hopefully I can get it made this week.

I’m currently working on another string quilt. I’m using Kaffe fabrics in it. The strings…..

The squares…..

I have a few more to make, so I might sew the Uneven bars quilt when I take a break from sewing strings.

That’s it for my design wall this week. Check out more walls at http://www.patchworktimes.com

Design wall 8/8/16 string borders

Here it is, another Monday has rolled around. I missed posting my design wall last week as we were on our way home from a quick vacation and then jumped right into work that needed to be done. Fruits and vegetables were ready to be picked and dealt with. I’ve got a freezer full of peaches, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and cantaloupe, all ready for smoothies! Yum!! The tomatoes are slowing coming around, but finally did get enough to can a few quarts yesterday.

We went through Omaha on our way home, so we stopped at Accuquilt and I finally broke down and bought the Accuquilt Go Big. I’ve been having fun cutting strips for more string quilts.

I managed to get a couple of my quilts on the machine last week and did quick panto’s on them.  I’m only showing the block on this one.

The other one I did was a variation of our Cinema pattern.

I had the top made but couldn’t decide on a backing. Saturday, I ran across a couple of fabrics in my stash that had polka dots, so I figured I’d make a pieced backing and use up some more of my stash.

Used up every bit of both fabrics! Yea!!

I’m not showing the quilt that’s on my design wall this week, but it’s getting a string border, which is what I’m working on today.

That’s it for me. To see what others are working on visit http://www.patchworktimes.com

Design wall 7/25/16 leftover squares

I’m working on a new string quilt design and ended up having some leftover 3 1/2″ squares. I sewed the squares together into blocks and now I need to decide on a layout for them. I’ve laid the blocks out several ways and This is  what I’m thinking…….now.

I took some small pieces of black fabric and filled in the background areas to get a better idea of the finished look.

I like it and this is probably the layout  I’ll go with…..but then you never know…..I could change my mind again.😳
